Today at Microsoft’s GamesCom press conference, the company announced Fable II: Game Episodes, which will allow players to enjoy Fable II in bite-sized chunks.
Fable II: Game Episodes won’t feature any new content not already available at retail or on Xbox Live Marketplace–instead, it will break down Fable II into five, separate downloadable pieces. The first episode will be free for everyone to download, but once you reach the end of the episode (which, according to Microsoft’s press release, is when you finish being a child in the game), you’ll have the option to purchase the next episode or purchase the entire game.
Microsoft revealed that the episodes would be available for purchase on September 29th, but no pricing details have been confirmed as of press time.
Phil Spencer, the general manager of Microsoft Game Studios, believes that this purchase format, along side the Games on Demand service, will prove successful.
“With the launch of Games on Demand on Xbox LIVE, we have a great tool in place to deliver classic titles in an incredibly convenient fashion,” said Phil Spencer in a company press release. “With the ‘Fable II’ episodic model, we’re encouraging people to experience the first chapter of the game for free, then move onto other chapters when they are ready. It’s a unique model and one that will appeal to gamers who’ve been hesitant to dive full into the original retail release.”
In addition to Fable II: Game Episodes, Microsoft also announced Fable III at their GamesCom press conference. Peter Molyneux, Fable III’s creative director, announced the title’s theme will have players in pursuit of power, rather than Fable II’s revenge-themed plot line.
