So, that was fast. Just yesterday, Sony revealed details concerning the integration of Facebook into the Playstation 3 via Firmware Update v3.10, but made no official word on when the update would go live (unless you count “soon” as a date).
Apparently, “soon” equates to “right now,” as network operation director Eric Lempel tells 1Up that gamers will be able to experience the social networking site from the comfort of their couches starting today.
According to Lempel, however, the process hasn’t been rushed: “It’s never been easy to just integrate new content into the PlayStation Network. We’ve had this planned for a while now.”
I’m sure the planning was quite thorough, but I still can’t help but think that the release has been sped up by yesterday’s launch of Facebook (alongside Twitter and Last.fm) on the 360.
Regardless, update v3.10 is apparently only the first step in Sony’s bid for social networking dominance, as more features will be added to the Facebook experience in the future. In addition, Sony is also apparently looking into forming associations with sites like Raptr (a 360, Steam, and World of Warcraft achievement tracker).
Aside from adding Facebook support, update v3.10 also updates the system’s friends list display and photo browser.
