The term “micro-transaction” was born out of this generation of consoles. As Microsoft has shown, there’s nothing “micro” about the sales that those transactions have rang up.
Speaking at Microsoft’s “Gamefest” event, Kevin Salcedo, Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Manager, the company has achieved $240 million in sales during the consoles lifecycle–with $180 million of that revenue coming in the past year.
Salcedo also said that games that offer downloadable content sell, on average, more than $21 million more at retail–provided that the content comes within the “sweet spot” of the first 30 days.
